The BlackBird 22 was designed to be a very useful boat, not just something to look at. You will be very reluctant to hide it away. I commend BlackBird on their investment in the tooling, machinery and, most of all, the craftsmanship to produce a fine quality, low maintenance boat at an affordable price.
Steve Killing, Designer
Design We selected Steve Killing to design the all-mahogany BlackBird 22 (and our upcoming twin-engine BlackBird 27) because of his reputation as one of North America's leading pleasure boat designers, and because he is committed to being involved at every stage of our boats' development and production.
Steve has created some of the world's most expressive and compelling designs, and we are all very proud that the BlackBird 22 has become one of them. He applies precision and engineering to his designs, but always with an eye to styling. His hulls display graceful transitions in shape and feature and just the right amount of accent hardware.
Steve designed the BlackBird 22 to be spacious and comfortable ... Steve designed the BlackBird 22 to be spacious and comfortable, but without losing any of the grace, distinction and passion of the great wooden boats of the golden era of wooden boatbuilding, from which we believe our boat is a worthy descendent
The hull has a moderate Vee-bottom which rides like magic - our water testing team hasn't yet managed to get the boat to misbehave. She runs clean, has inspiring acceleration and tops out at over 55 mph.
What goes into your BlackBird Twenty Two ...
Mahogany For fine boat building, mahogany has always been the wood of choice. The mahogany we use is Tropical and finishes with a very smooth, hard surface; it takes a stain well and exhibits a beautiful grain.
Structural parts of the boat are made from the finest marine mahogany plywood available. These structural stringers and frames are extremely stable and highly resistant to both moisture and fungus.
Where multi-directional strength is required, high-grade marine plywood is the material of choice. But when final finish is important, solid mahogany is used.
Coatings Marine coatings and finishes have come a long way since the golden era of wooden boats and their constant upkeep. Modern epoxies finished with an ultraviolet-blocking coating give a fine mirror finish that requires little maintenance.
Within the hull we use epoxy adhesives which bonds all wooden members to distribute the loads evenly. It also seals the wood from moisture.
Steve Killing, our designer, specified that a single application of 6-ounce, transparent fiberglass be embedded in the epoxy on the bottom of each boat. This proven construction process for wooden boats provides abrasion protection and increased overall strength. Because our application encapsulates the wood on the inside as well as the outside of the hull, the fiberglass is an integral, structural part of the hull.
Deck Hardware BlackBird is fanatical about all aspects of design, including the shape and finish of our deck hardware, so we design and fabricate our own. All hardware is either custom milled in our plant or cast and then chromed to a high, long lasting luster.
Even the way we attach our deck hardware is non-traditional. The underside of each piece of BlackBird hardware has two bosses which allow the piece to be through-bolted from below the deck with no fasteners showing. The result is hardware which is strong and durable with a clean, smooth look.
